Southern Living readers pick one Alabama beach among South’s best
Southern Living’s readers have weighed in on “The 15 Best Beaches In The South,” and yes, Alabama is represented.
Gulf Shores/Orange Beach appears first on the list, though the introduction to the article specifies that the entries are presented “in no particular order.” Now, Southern Living’s tendency to lump Gulf Shores and Orange Beach together is sometimes objectionable, but we’ll give them a pass on this one. It is the same stretch of sugar sand, after all.
According to the article, readers praised the “docile Gulf of Mexico waves” – which, tragically, obviously isn’t always the case – and the area’s family friendly amenities.
South Carolina and Florida dominated with, respectively, six and five of the 15 listings. Picks in Florida include shores in Pensacola and Destin, within easy driving range of Alabama’s lone entry. North Carolina and Georgia rounded things out, meaning Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas all got skunked despite their Gulf of Mexico frontage.
A whopping 10 of the 15 entries are barrier islands, but they don’t include Alabama’s “sunset capital,” Dauphin Island.
