Alabama prospects shut out in 78th annual NBA Draft

For the first time since 2017, the NBA Draft passed without a prospect picked who had played at an Alabama high school or college.

The NBA concluded its 78th draft on Thursday with 28 second-round picks, and while Alabama guard Aaron Estrada, Ole Miss guard Allen Flanigan (who played four seasons at Auburn), UAB center Eric Gaines and Auburn forward Jaylin Williams were considered second-round possibilities, none was picked.

Thirteen of the second-round selections were traded during a day of wheeling and dealing in the NBA. Boston College center Quinten Post was chosen at No. 52 by the Golden State Warriors and traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which sent him to the Portland Trail Blazers. The Warriors then re-acquired Post from Portland.

The only player chosen from the SEC on Thursday was Kentucky guard Antonio Reeves, who was picked at No. 47 by the Orlando Magic for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Three SEC players were chosen in the first round on Wednesday night – Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard at No. 3 by the Houston Rockets, Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham at No. 8 by the San Antonio Spurs for Minnesota Timberwolves and Tennessee forward Dalton Knecht at No. 17 by the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers used their second-round selection on Southern Cal guard Bronny James, putting a father and son in the NBA at the same time for first time. James is the son of Los Angeles forward LeBron James.

Thursday’s choices were short two picks because the Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns lost a second-round selection apiece for violating the NBA’s tampering rules.
