9-year-old girl critical, father injured in shooting at Birmingham motel

A 9-year-old girl is fighting for her life in Children’s Hospital after she and her 31-year-old father were shot Friday night in Birmingham, authorities said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service crews responded to the two victims at the Sun Inn the 1500 block of Bessemer Road around 6:25 p.m. Friday.

The girl was shot in the abdomen. She was taken to Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

The man, who was shot in the arm, was taken to Princeton Hospital in stable condition.

Birmingham police Sgt. Monica Law said the girl and her father were staying at the Sun Inn and were shot during what authorities believe may have been a robbery attempt. Police were unsure how long the father and daughter were staying at the motel.

Police believe at least two suspects were involved in the shooting.

The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle. None have been apprehended as of 7:45 p.m. Friday.
