Birmingham police spotlight takes a thirsty turn: ‘Chase me, please, officer’

It isn’t everyday that you see people volunteering to get arrested, but that’s exactly what it is happening after the Birmingham Police Department highlighted one of its officers on the department’s social media platforms.

Officer Richard Bowlin, a 27-year-old Hoover High School graduate who works patrol in the South Precinct, was featured Wednesday on BPD’s “Officer Spotlight.”

Every couple of weeks, the department features an officer and it’s always well-received.

Bowlin’s spotlight was no different — except that it quickly took a sharp turn toward thirsty.

The post, which has received more than 1,000 likes and has been shared hundreds of times, talked about Bowlin’s reason for becoming an officer – that it would teach him maturity and help him develop structure, and would give him the chance to help his community.

That’s all admirable, but it is definitely not what the commenters – some comparing him to Tom Cruise – noticed.

“Hello? Officer? Somebody broke into my house. I’m hiding in my closet,’’ one woman wrote. “He lit a candle and turned the radio on. He’s not armed so you’ll only need your handcuffs.”

“All the rain today is God crying looking at this masterpiece,” police spokesman Truman Fitzgerald posted.

Here are some others comments:

“Will he date me if I’m a felon? I’m a mugshawty.”

“It ought to be a crime to look that good!”

“I may just have to get arrested in Birmingham later”

“I have a warrant and I’m at the chik fil a in five points. Chase me, please, officer.”

“I find it very disrespectful that you’re not sharing all the officer info, like exact location or his Instagram in case we needed help ASAP.”

“Birmingham about to have a 74 percent increase in misdemeanor crimes committed by women.”

“What do I have to do to get cuffed and shoved head-first in the back seat?”

“The uptick in crime committed by females in Birmingham spiked on this day of our Lord, 2024, thanks to Officer Bowlin.”

Bowlin said he thought maybe 100 people would see the post. Boy, was he surprised.

He said his mom is loving it, and he’s gotten some good natured ribbing from his co-workers.

“I find it hysterical. I love it,’’ Bowlin said. “My biggest thing is it makes me happy that we have this many people willing to reach out and give polite comments.”

“Some of them are funny, really funny,’’ Bowlin said. “But it’s good to know the relationship we have with the community is where we can joke and have a good time.”

“I’m very thankful people are supportive of us and that we’re able to have a good time about it,’’ he said, “and that we have a good relationship with the community.”

Bowlin, by the way, is single, which some admirers figured out by stalking his social media.

Asked if anyone had creeped into his DM’s, Bowlin said with a laugh, “I’ve had a few. I’m just leaving them there.”
