How much hotter is it than a ‘normal’ June in Alabama?

Alabama is in the midst of a heat wave. And it could continue into next week.

High temperatures on Tuesday are expected to peak in the mid- to upper 90s, and some spots could even hit 100 degrees. Heat advisories will be in effect today for part of southwest Alabama, which will also have to deal with higher humidity levels:

But it’s June. It’s Alabama. It’s almost guaranteed to be hot. How much hotter are this week’s temperatures than what is “normal”?

The National Weather Service has the answer thanks to years’ and years’ worth of observations.

Many areas could end up nearly 10 degrees hotter than what is expected for this point in June.

Some areas have more years of data than others, but here’s a look at the average high temperatures for June 25, along with today’s forecast highs:

* Anniston: Average high 89 degrees; today’s forecast 97 degrees.

* Birmingham: Average high 90 degrees; today’s forecast 99 degrees.

* Cullman: Average high 87 degrees; today’s forecast 95 degrees.

After a slight reprieve (very slight) on Thursday, above-average high temperatures are expected to continue into next week, according to the weather service.

The Climate Prediction Center’s eight- to 14-day temperature outlook shows a high probability of above-average temperatures continuing well into June:
