Former Alabama prep star has starting opportunity with Giants
The New York Giants need an outside cornerback to take Adoree Jackson’s spot in the lineup for the 2024 season. Former Saraland High School standout Cor’Dale Flott will go to the NFL team’s training camp with the opportunity to be the new cornerback.
“Excited for this opportunity that (head coach Brian) Daboll and (defensive-backs) Coach Rome (Henderson) gave me,” Flott said during the Giants’ offseason program. “Take it day-by-day and continue to get better and compete against the offensive guys, too. …
“I took advantage of every opportunity I had from Year 1 all of the way to Year 3 now. The same urgency still applies. Continue to try to up my game. Continue to learn from older veterans. Continue to learn from other players. That’s my approach to it.”
Before New York even got on the field for its offseason program, Daboll said: “I’ve got a lot of confidence in Flott.”
Jackson and first-round rookie Deonte Banks worked as the Giants’ starting cornerbacks last season. New York did not re-sign Jackson, and he remains a free agent.
As a third-round rookie from LSU in 2022, Flott started his second and third NFL games, then missed the next six games with a calf injury. In 2023, Flott missed the first three games because of a hamstring injury. He came back to get the bulk of his action as the Giants’ slot corner in the remaining 14 games.
“Everybody is on their own the timeline,” Flott said, “and you can’t compare yourself to other guys and what other guys are doing. The best thing you can do is take notes from the veterans, the guys that have been around, and figure out what works for you, whether that’s routine, whether that’s on the field, off the field, film work, and just picking guys’ minds. That’s what I started working on and get better at.”
Flott could be freed from nickel duty if the Giants coaches determine Andru Phillips, a third-round pick from Kentucky on April 26, can handle the slot work.
“Either/or,” Flott said about his preference between the slot and outside. “Whatever works for the team. Just fitting the puzzle pieces around, fitting wherever, whether nickel or corner or whatever works for the team.”
Other cornerbacks heading to training camp with the Giants include Tre Herndon, David Long Jr., Nick McCloud and Aaron Robinson.
A six-year NFL veteran, Herndon signed with New York after a successful tryout at the Giants’ mandatory minicamp this month. Long came aboard as a free agent after playing in 14 games with three teams in 2023, his fifth NFL season. McCloud started three games for New York while contributing heavily on special teams last season. A former Alabama defensive back, Robinson has been limited to 11 games by injuries since joining the Giants from UCF in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
“All those guys have progressed,” New York defensive coordinator Shane Bowen said during mandatory minicamp. “My challenge to that group and really the majority of our group now is consistency. When we get back in training camp, I’m looking for those guys that are consistently reliable to go out there and do their job, play with the technique and fundamentals we’re asking them to play with.
“That’s ultimately how they’re going to win their one-on-one matchups. Bottom line: We need guys to start separating themselves. Maybe not the first week in training camp, but as we get going those first few weeks in training camp, we’ve got to start defining roles. I want to see guys take opportunities, grab them and start to pull away.
“It’s the NFL. Like, everybody has to earn it. Go do it.”
The Giants start work at training camp on July 24.
New York opens its three-game preseason schedule on Aug. 8 against the Detroit Lions and kicks off its regular-season slate on Sept. 8 against the Minnesota Vikings.
