A Shelby County man arrested for the seventh time on indecent exposure is back in jail after prosecutors asked for a revocation of his probation on a previous conviction.

Jonathan Wade Copeland, of Maylene, was taken into custody Sunday after Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies say he exposed himself to a 20-year-old woman at an apartment complex in southern Jefferson County.

On Jan. 10, said Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money, deputies were dispatched to the 2200 block of Wildridge Circle, which is across from Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, on reports of a man who had exposed himself.

Investigators determined the man – now identified as Copeland – had gained access to a vacant apartment and exposed himself from the apartment’s balcony. The victim is 20 years old.

Copeland was charged with indecent exposure and third-degree burglary.  He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Sunday and released Monday after posting $30,000 bond.

Prior to his Sunday arrest, Copeland had been arrested at least six times on charges that he exposed his genitals to a woman.

Alabama law defines the crime as: “with intent to arouse or gratify sexual desire of himself or of any person other than his spouse, he exposes his genitals under circumstances in which he knows his conduct is likely to cause affront or alarm in any public place.”

On March 15, 2022, Copeland pleaded guilty to felony indecent exposure in the Hoover incidents and received a five-year suspended sentence.

Following his latest arrest, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion asking that his probation in that case be revoked following his new arrest this week.

Court and jail records show he was taken back into custody Thursday night on a probation revocation warrant. A hearing will determine whether his probation is indeed to be revoked.

Copeland was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 6:31 p.m. Thursday and is being held without bond.

In 2019, Copeland was charged after authorities say he exposed himself to a shopper at the Chelsea Walmart.

At that time, he had previous indecent exposure convictions in Pelham and Homewood dating back nine years.

In March 2017, Hoover police arrested Copeland on a felony charge, saying Alabama’s Indecent Exposure law has a provision that allows the crime to be upgraded to a felony after a third or more conviction of the same crime.

In the 2017 incident, police say Copeland exposed himself to a female shopper inside Michael’s and another female shopper in At Home at the Grove.
