Andrew Purcell becomes latest Enterprise star to commit to SEC school
It’s been a big weekend for the Enterprise football team.
On Saturday, athletic Eric Winters committed to Auburn.
On Monday, teammate Andrew Purcell joined Winters as a future SEC player, committing to Kentucky.
“It’s really cool,” Enterprise head coach Ben Blackmon said. “I’m proud for both. They are both hard workers and obviously really talented players with a bright future ahead of them. It’s definitely big for our school. I’ve had both of these guys for three years. I definitely feel like Enterprise football is on the way up.”
Purcell and Winters won’t be on the only Wildcats headed to play big-time college football next year. Defensive lineman Zion Grady, a one-time Alabama commit, is expected to make his choice in the near future as well. He is scheduled to visit Ohio State this weekend.
Winters is ranked as the No. 5 senior recruit in the state, according to the 247 composite rankings. Grady, a transfer from Charles Henderson, is No. 6. Purcell is No. 18.
The 5-foot-10.5, 185-pound Purcell is expected to play cornerback at Kentucky. He also plays wide receiver for Blackmon’s team. He led Class 7A with seven interceptions in 2023.
“He’s a very good player,” Blackmon said. “He’s a really good man-to-man guy. He’s been a three-year starter. He also competes in the high jump. He’s an explosive kid.”
Purcell returned two of his seven interceptions for touchdowns and made 25 tackles.
“I think his explosiveness and athletic ability really sets the bar high for him for the future,” Blackmon said. “He’s going to continue to be consistent in his approach and that will allow him to get better and better each day.”
Winters did it all for Enterprise last year, rushing for 699 yards and 12 TDs and passing for 501 yards and 5 TDs at quarterback and making 17 tackles and an interception on defense. He will mainly play in the secondary and at receiver for the Wildcats this year, though he also may see spot duty at quarterback. He’s expected to play safety at Auburn.
“He’s got great length at 6-3, 195,” Blackmon said. “He’s a versatile guy who can play in the box or outside in space. He runs well. He went to the Rivals camp in Atlanta and was the MVP. Eric has a ton of upside. I think he is one of the few kids you coach that you know could project to play on Sunday one day.”
Enterprise is scheduled to open the 2024 season at Andalusia on Aug. 23.
