‘70s R&B singer dead at age 70

Angela Bofill, known for hits “I Try” and “I’m On Your Side,” has died. She was 70.

The R&B singer and songwriter was found dead at her daughter’s home in California on Thursday, Bofill’s representative Rich Engel confirmed to PEOPLE.

A cause of death was not reported.

“On behalf of my dear friend Angie, I am saddened to announce her passing on the morning of June 13,” Engel posted on Facebook along with funeral information.

Bofill suffered a stroke in 2006 and another one in 2007, which caused paralysis on her left side. She had speech and physical therapy as a result. Her manager organized a benefit concert in Englewood to cover Bofill’s hospital bills as she did not have health insurance at the time.

“The Escovedo family is sad by the loss of this amazing beautiful soul,” Sheila E. (whose real name is Sheila Escovedo), 66, posted on Bofill’s personal Facebook account. “We are praying for the family. You will truly be missed my sister my queen. Rest in peace.”

The singer was inducted into the Women’s Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023.

Bofill is survived by her husband, Chris, and daughter Shauna.
