Wreck with multiple fatalities closes I-65 north of Mobile

An early-morning accident with multiple fatalities closed northbound I-65 on Monday. An unrelated incident further north closed a southbound lane.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency send out a notice shortly before 9 a.m. saying that a single-vehicle crash occurred about 6:37 a.m. near the 21 mile marker. ALEA said that a northbound lane would be blocked for “an undetermined amount of time.” The Creola Fire Department said via Facebook that it was on the scene, which was “just north of exit 22.” It said there were multiple fatalities and that it was a “long term scene.”

An update from ALEA at about 9:15 said that northbound I-65 would remain closed until further notice. The location is several miles south of the high-rise bridge at the edge of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta.

ALEA issued a separate notice at 9:20 reporting that a crash involving two commercial vehicles had taken place at about 7:55 a.m. near I-65 mile marker 58 in Escambia County. The left northbound lane was closed at that location, according to ALEA.
