Mobile’s Paige Madden on track for 2nd straight Olympics

Mobile native Paige Madden appears set to compete in a second straight Summer Olympics.

The 25-year-old finished second behind four-time Olympian Katie Ledecky in the 400-meter freestyle at the 2024 USA Swimming U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Saturday night in Indianapolis. Though the Olympic team won’t technically be announced until after the trials end this weekend, she has tentatively locked up a spot on Team USA in Paris next month.

Madden, a UMS-Wright graduate and former NCAA champion at the University of Virginia, posted a time of 4:02.08 (four minutes, 2.08 seconds) in the 400 free, well ahead of the Olympic-qualifying standard of 4:07.90. She finished third in the 200-meter freestyle semifinals on Sunday night, posting a personal-best time of 1:56.36, also besting the Olympic standard of 1:57.26.

The women’s 200-meter freestyle finals are set for Monday night.

Madden won a silver medal as part of the U.S. 4×200-meter freestyle team in the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo (which were delayed a year by COVID), and would appear to be a lock to earn a spot on that team again. There is no relay component in the 400-meter freestyle.

Madden is believed to be just the fourth Mobilian — and second woman — to compete for the United States in the Olympics in any sport, following Mabel Walker Thornton (track & field, 1948), Casey Converse (swimming, 1976) and DeMarcus Cousins (basketball, 2016). Madden was just the second Mobilian to earn an Olympic medal after Cousins took gold with Team USA in Rio de Janeiro.

The 2024 Olympics take place July 26-Aug. 11 in Paris.
