Near record highs possible today and Sunday

Alabama could see some of its hottest temperatures of the week today and Sunday, according to forecasters.

There are no heat advisories in effect, however. That’s because the heat index, or “feels like” temperature, isn’t expected to reach heat advisory levels today thanks to slightly lower humidity levels.

That’s not to say it won’t be hot — unseasonably hot — today and Sunday, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service.

High temperatures today are expected to peak in the 90s — and upper 90s for some of the typically hotter spots in south and south-central Alabama (today’s temperature forecast is at the top of this post.)

Here are the daily high temperature records — some of which have been standing for a while — for June 15 for a few Alabama cities:

* Alexander City: 96 in 2011

* Birmingham: 98 in 2011

* Cullman: 93 in 2022

* Dauphin Island: 93 in 1984

* Dothan: 101 in 2011

* Gadsden: 97 in 2011

* Greenville: 103 in 1963

* Guntersville: 97 in 1988

The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures to back off some starting on Monday. Highs are expected to still be in the 90s, but the low 90s instead of the upper 90s.
