Weeklong series of youth, community events planned around MLB at Rickwood Field game

Major League Baseball plans a weeklong series of youth and community events in Birmingham leading up to Thursday’s MLB at Rickwood Field Game between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.

Here’s a look at the planned events:

• Monday features a screening of the HBO original documentary Say Hey, Willie Mays! at the historic Carver Theater on 4th Avenue North in. The film chronicles the life and career of Mays, the 93-year-old Birmingham native who went on to be among the greatest baseball players in history. The event will feature a reception prior to the film screening, plus a post-screening conversation between director Nelson George and Willie’s son, Michael Mays. The event, which is already at capacity, begins at 5 p.m.

• Tuesday features Play Ball, MLB’s signature youth engagement activity, at Regions Field, home of the Birmingham Barons. More than 100 Birmingham children from the city’s RBI programs will be joined by Play Ball Ambassador James Lowe (AKA, “Coach Ballgame”) and other special guests. The Play Ball event begins at noon.
