Shocking amount egg prices have increased in Alabama (at least we’re not Hawaii)
Anyone who has been to the grocery store can tell you – egg prices are outrageous.
Avian flu that wiped out millions of chickens on poultry farms – coupled with across-the-board inflation on groceries – has led to egg shortages and soaring prices. December data shows egg prices doubling in some states with the biggest increase in Iowa, where, according to Business Insider, the price of a dozen eggs grew by a whopping 153% over last year to reach $4.44.
Business Insider’s analysis of Instacart data found states in the upper Midwest saw the average price for a dozen eggs double in December over the same month in 2021. In addition to Iowa’s soaring costs, egg prices in South Dakota rose 137% and Wisconsin prices were up 118%.
Florida and Hawaii have the highest average prices per carton. A dozen eggs in Florida cost $6.36, an increase of a relatively low 57% over last year. In Hawaii, where most food items have to be imported, a dozen eggs cost $9.73 a carton, up 51% from last year.
Business Insider found the average price of a dozen eggs in Alabama was $6.12, an increase of an eye-popping 74% over the same time last year. That increase is higher than any surrounding states, including Mississippi (67%), Georgia (59%) and Tennessee (60%).
Nationally, egg prices rose 11% from November 2022 to December 2022, the most recent Consumer Price Index stats available. Those figures represent an increase of nearly 60% more compared to December 2021.
