Two disturbances being watched in the Gulf

The National Hurricane Center on Wednesday was keeping an eye on two areas in or near the Gulf of Mexico.

But neither one is expected to become a hurricane and threaten Alabama.

However, parts of Alabama could get several inches of rain in the next week or so.

The first system has brought a lot of rain, storms and flooding to parts of South Florida. It was an area of low pressure located over the Florida peninsula on Wednesday.

The hurricane center said that conditions aren’t great for it to get organized, but some slow development will be possible over the next few days as the system tracks northeastward over Florida and into the western Atlantic.

Forecasters said heavy rain will continue to be possible over the Florida peninsula over the next few days.

That disturbance has a 20 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next week.

The second Gulf system was expected to form this weekend far to the south in the Bay of Campeche.

The hurricane center said the environment in that area is more favorable for tropical development, and the system could slowly get its act together early next week.

It is expected to track to the west or west-northwest during that time, likely toward Mexico. However, forecasters in south Texas are keeping an eye on it just in case.

That system also has a 20 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression in the next week.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville, Texas, said forecast models are not in agreement on what happens with the southern Gulf system, but “there are signs of some form of either a tropical depression or weak tropical storm. However, it would seem that the most likely landfall at this time would be well to our south around Veracruz (Mexico).”

Both systems could bring a lot of rain to parts of the U.S. Both Florida and south Texas have needed the rain, but Florida has seen a deluge over the past few days.

South Alabama could also get several inches of rain from one or both systems depending on the paths they end up taking.

There have been no named storms so far in 2024 in the Atlantic, but this time of year is typically on the quiet side in the tropics.

Forecasters are predicting that the hurricane season could kick into high gear later this summer however, with 17-25 named storms possible before the end of the season on Nov. 30.
