A woman riding a bicycle was killed Monday night after she was struck by a vehicle on Dauphin Island Parkway.

The victim, only described as a woman in her late 30s, was struck around 8:30 p.m. on the parkway by Sand Island Road in Belle Fontaine, Fowl River Volunteer Fire Chief John Corideo told Fox 10.

The bicyclist was riding north in the southbound lanes and in the middle of the road when she was struck, the chief said.

He said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.

An Alabama Law Enforcement Agency trooper told AL.com that ALEA is investigating the incident but could not provide other information because the probe was ongoing.
