Alabama man jailed under new state law for allegedly stalking ex-wife with tracking device

An Enterprise man is behind bars, accused of stalking his ex-wife and putting a tracking device on her vehicle.

Jeremie Michael Spencer, 43, is charged with second-degree domestic violence/stalking and first-degree electronic stalking.

Alabama passed a new law last year that makes it illegal to put a tracking device on the property of another person.

Spencer was taken into custody Monday.

The investigation began in late May when Dothan police were made aware of alleged threats made to Spencer’s ex-wife. The couple divorced several years ago, court records show.

The victim on May 29 reported that she was being harassed by Spencer via text messages and phone calls.

In the victim’s successful request for a protection from abuse order against Spencer, she wrote that he made threats in front of their adolescent son that he was going to “(expletive) me up” and brandished a rifle.

She stated he was making threats and using diminishing words against her.

Dothan police Lt. Scott Owens said investigators found Spencer had sent threatening texts or made phone calls to the victim more than 50 times during an eight-day period.

The victim said Spencer was acting like he knew her every move, so she checked her home surveillance cameras. On the footage, she saw him emerging from underneath her vehicle and then she found a tracking device.

Spencer is being held without bond in the Houston County Jail.

“Everyone deserves relationships free from domestic violence,’’ Owens said.
