AHSAA bowling: Top contenders set for Day 2 of regionals
Sparkman High School’s Jenna Webber rolled a 244 in the first round of Thursday’s traditional series competition and closed out the first day of AHSAA 2023 Regional Bowling Championships with a 596 series.
Sparkman, the defending 6A/7A state champions, finished the first day with a 2,489 team score in the traditional round. The Senators move to Friday’s Baker Format single-elimination duals championship round as the No. 1 seed in the North Regional being held at Shindig Family Entertainment Center at Tuscaloosa.
Sparkman will meet No. 8 seed Gadsden City in the first round of the team playoffs Friday. American Christian, which the Class 1A/5A state title last season, moved up to 6A/7A this season and rolled a 2,114 team total Thursday to earn the No. 2 seed. The Lady Patriots will meet Gardendale in the first round Friday.
Webber claimed the traditional series individual title in the North 6A/7A competition.
Cora Clontz rolled a 255 in the second game of the traditional series Thursday to claim the North 1A/5A traditional series individual crown. Her 622 series was tops for all bowlers Thursday.
Southside earned the top seed for Friday’s dual tourney with 2,337 total pins in the traditional round. East Limestone earned No. 2 seed with 2,270 pins.
In the South Regional played at Eastern Shore Lanes in Spanish Fort, Sipsey Valley emerged as top seed in Class 1A/5A with a 2,151 team total. Stanhope Elmore edged Thompson by 56 pins to earn the South Class 6A/7A top seed. The Mustangs had 2,541 pins and the Warriors had 2,485.
Sipsey Valley’s Sierra Knight rolled 214 in her first game and finished with a 534 series to top the South 1A/5A individual competition. Stanhope’s Alyssa Ward had a 586 series to claim the top honors in the 6A/7A individual series competition.
