Alabama lands transfer linebacker from Georgia
Georgia linebacker Trezmen Marshall announced Thursday evening that he is transferring to Alabama.
Marshall, who played the past four seasons for the Bulldogs, made his announcement in an Instagram post after entering the NCAA transfer portal last Friday.
Listed at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds by Georgia, Marshall played mostly on special teams. He finished the Bulldogs’ 2022 season with 19 total tackles, including 4.5 for a loss. He made one sack, against Tennessee, and one interception, against South Carolina.
Alabama was thin on numbers at inside linebacker after losing senior starters Henry To’o To’o and Jaylen Moody, and having Demouy Kennedy enter the NCAA transfer portal earlier this week. Marshall joins junior college transfer Justin Jefferson as the Tide’s two incoming inside linebackers this offseason.
Deontae Lawson, who rotated with Moody during the 2022 season, is likely to start at one inside linebacker spot in 2023. The other starting spot is less certain, with a pair of freshmen in Jihaad Campbell and Shawn Murphy having both seen action in last month’s Sugar Bowl. Ian Jackson and Kendrick Blackshire are the other two returners at the position.
Marshall is Alabama’s second transfer portal addition for 2023 after it added Maryland tight end CJ Dippre. The Tide added five players through the transfer portal last offseason to mixed results.
The Homerville, Georgia native was the No. 122 overall-rated player in 247 Sports’ composite of the 2019 recruiting class, and the seventh-best inside linebacker.
After playing in 14 games as a freshman in 2019, Marshall was limited to three games for Georgia in 2020 because of shoulder surgery. He played only four games in 2021 before a knee injury ended his season, and returned to play in 14 games this season.
