University of Alabama campuses plan to increase in-state tuition this fall

Students at University of Alabama System campuses could see tuition rates increase by up to 4% for the 2024-25 school year, trustees announced Thursday.

The UA System Board of Trustees Finance Committee unanimously approved a resolution Thursday afternoon that would increase in-state, undergraduate tuition rates by 2.5%. Out-of-state tuition would rise by 3% at UA and UAB, and by 4% at UAH. Required fees will not change.

The full board of trustees, which oversees the campuses in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Huntsville, will vote on the increases at its board meeting on Friday, June 7.

Here’s how much tuition could change for in-state students:

  • University of Alabama: $5,690 per semester, up from $5,550
  • University of Alabama at Birmingham: $5,655 per semester, up from $5,520
  • University of Alabama at Huntsville: $5,187 per semester, up from $5,060

And for out-of-state students:

  • University of Alabama: $16,686 per semester, up from $16,200
  • University of Alabama at Birmingham: $14,070 per semester, up from $13,665
  • University of Alabama at Huntsville: $12,325 per semester, up from $11,325

UA System campuses froze tuition for several years during the pandemic. Last year, trustees voted to raise out-of-state tuition, but kept in-state tuition flat.

“Each year, we carefully and seriously consider our university’s tuition rates, and any time there is a proposed change, it is necessary to advance our system wide commitment to academic excellence, ensure financial stability and manage increasing costs,” Dana Keith, vice chancellor for communications said at Thursday’s committee meeting.

Keith said the changes would account for “significant increases” in operating expenses, including insurance and technology costs, as well as staff retirement and benefits.

According to a 2022 State Higher Education Finance report, Alabama college net tuition revenue was twice the national average in 2021, at $13,685 per full-time student. (Net tuition revenue is the total amount of tuition and fees, minus state and institutional financial aid). Experts said that only students in Michigan, Vermont and Delaware paid more for degrees.

Colleges asked for a 7% increase in state funds this year to address similar issues. At UA System campuses, state funding is the third largest source of revenue, behind tuition and grants, Keith said.

Troy and Jacksonville State University recently approved slight increases to tuition rates per credit hour. Auburn University voted in August to raise tuition by 3% for the 2024-25 school year.

The University of Montevallo voted in February to freeze tuition for the seventh year in a row. Alabama State University’s tuition prices also will remain flat next year.

Other colleges typically post tuition prices at some point in the summer.
