Kayaker captures video of bear fighting off two alligators in Florida river
Alligators are known to snatch dogs and other animals from the banks of Florida waterways, but two gators tried to bite off more than they could chew earlier this week.
In a video posted to Facebook, DeBary, Fla., resident Tyler Futrell captured a bear swimming in the river and fighting off not one, but two alligators before making its way back onto shore.

Futrell told WKMG he was kayaking Tuesday morning on St. John’s River near the High Banks Marina, about 25 miles north of Orlando, when he first spotted the bear — although at first he didn’t realize what he was seeing.
“I grew up around here, so I’m pretty used to seeing hogs and whatever,” he told the TV station. “But a bear is a pretty rare sight, so it didn’t even cross my mind.”
Futrell said he made a point to keep his distance while recording the incident on his phone. The video follows the bear and Futrell sees an alligator approaching.
“Alligator coming to say ‘hi,’” Futrell is heard saying.
The alligator lunged at the bear in an apparent attack, but the bear swatted the gator away with one of its massive paws.
Black bears are native to Florida, with males averaging 250 to 450 pounds — more than large enough to take on a large gator. Futrell noted on Facebook the first gator was definitely “bigger” than his 10-foot kayak.
The bear “literally couldn’t have cared less,” about the gator, Futrell said.
The bear continued on, but as it neared the bank of the river, another gator approached and also received a swat from the bear, which then made it onto shore. Only when the bear was out of the water did Futrell fully realized he had been recording a bear.
“When (the bear) got out, he just seemed kind of annoyed,” Futrell said.
