Why was Alec Baldwin charged with involuntary manslaughter?

Prosecutors announced Thursday that actor Alec Baldwin will be charged with involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer who was killed on a New Mexico movie set.

The attorney for Baldwin released a statement that the charge was a “miscarriage of justice.” Meanwhile, the lawyer for the family of Halyna Hutchins said, “No one is above the law.”

But what did Baldwin – known for his roles in “30 Rock” and “The Hunt for Red October” and more – do to warrant the charges?

On Oct. 21, 2021, Baldwin was rehearsing a scene on the set of the movie “Rust” on a ranch near Santa Fe, N.M. Hutchins and director Joel Souza were there. They were lining up a camera angle to capture Baldwin pulling his prop gun from his holster and aiming it at the camera.

The gun went off and a bullet hit Hutchins in the chest, then lodged into Souza’s shoulder. Hutchins died that day, while Souza recovered from his injury.

Hollywood film protocols forbid live rounds on movie sets, according to the LA Times. However, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s investigators found multiple live rounds with “dummy rounds” on set.

Baldwin acknowledges pulling back the gun’s hammer but told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in an interview that he did not pull the trigger on the gun.

“I didn’t pull the trigger,” Baldwin said. “I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them. Never.”

It was Baldwin’s first sitdown interview since the Oct. 21 shooting. Authorities have said Baldwin was told the gun was safe to handle but continued to investigate how a live round ended up in the weapon.

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Baldwin and other key members of the production on Feb. 15, 2022.

The lawsuit named Baldwin and others who “are responsible for the safety on the set” and called out “reckless behavior and cost-cutting” that led to the death of Hutchins, according to the family’s lawyer.
