Birmingham-Southern drops first game of College World Series

An impressive and heroically rowdy contingent of Birmingham-Southern fans made the trip to Eastlake, Ohio, for the Division III Baseball World Series.

They’ll have at least one more game to celebrate a team that’s inspiring sports fans across the country and representing the final days of a proud school.

Birmingham-Southern officially shut down on Friday. Coinciding with the final day of its school, the Birmingham-Southern baseball team played its first game in the D-III World Series at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio. Birmingham-Southern dropped the first game 7-5 to Salve Regina University and will now play at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday in what could be the final game for the team.

Birmingham-Southern fell into a 7-0 hole against Salve Regina, a team from Newport, R.I., but nearly climbed out with a late-innings rally. The Panthers scored one in the sixth and then four in the seventh off a series of singles.

Down 7-5, Birmingham-Southern loaded the bases in the eighth inning but left the bases stranded. The Panthers then put their first two batters on base in the ninth, but the game ended with three strikeouts. Birmingham-Southern left 11 runners on base.

Birmingham-Southern plays the loser of a game between Wisconsin-Whitewater and Randolph-Macon on Saturday.
