St. Louis Battlehawks not tipping hand on quarterback plans

The St. Louis Battlehawks could close the 2024 United Football League season with three consecutive games in the Dome at America’s Center.

The Battlehawks play the San Antonio Brahmas there in their regular-season finale at 3 p.m. CDT Saturday. FOX will televise the game.

If St. Louis wins that game, the Battlehawks and Brahmas will square off again in a UFL playoff semifinal game at 6 p.m. June 9 in St. Louis. If San Antonio wins on Saturday, the XFL Conference Championship Game against St. Louis will be played in the Alamodome.

The winner of the June 9 meeting will advance to the UFL Championship Game, which is set for 4 p.m. June 16 at the Dome at America’s Center.

But who’ll play quarterback for St. Louis to get the ball rolling?

Regular starter AJ McCarron has missed the past two games because of an ankle injury. Manny Wilkins went all the way under center in a 26-21 victory over the D.C. Defenders on May 19 and a 36-22 loss to the Arlington Renegades on Saturday. The Battlehawks also have former Gulf Shores High School and Troy standout Brandon Silvers available at quarterback.

On Thursday, St. Louis coach Anthony Becht wasn’t tipping the Battlehawks’ hand on the quarterback plans.

“Right now, we feel good about what we have,” Becht said. “AJ’s coming along. Manny’s got two games under his belt. Brandon has prepared himself as well. Again, it’s kind of just day-by-day with everything.

“But again, what Manny has done has been really good. His legs and that factor has been helpful for our team, and he’s been able to grow a little bit over two weeks, so just getting that under his belt. And then just bigger picture, it’s just more of a day-by-day thing.”

In his two games as the starter, Wilkins has completed 27-of-50 passes for 305 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions and run for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

Wilkins’ interceptions came on St. Louis’ final three possessions in Saturday’s loss to Arlington.

In the Battlehawks’ first seven games of the 2024 season, McCarron threw three interceptions in 231 passes. In St. Louis’ 31-24 victory over San Antonio on April 14, the former Alabama All-American completed 19-of-27 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran four times for 21 yards and one touchdown.

“I think our confidence was really pretty good for about three-and-a-half quarters,” Becht said about the team’s confidence in Wilkins coming off a three-interception fourth quarter. “I think everybody else could have done a better job, to be quite frank, to rally around him so we didn’t have to get in those circumstances. Now, three turnovers are three turnovers. We can’t allow it; we can’t have it. It’s not who we are. We’re used to a different protectiveness at that position, and Manny knows that.

“But at the end of the day, our team collectively has to play better. I think Manny can say the same thing about our secondary and then all that, which they’re not. That’s not what it’s all about. More or less, guys need to worry about themselves this week, and I think that message has been evident being that it was a 50-man kind of abysmal performance, so no one can really stand out there and feel bad about anybody’s performance except themselves.”

The Battlehawks are dealing with quarterback questions with the UFL’s top defense coming to town. St. Louis is the only team that has scored more than 19 points in a game this season against the Brahmas under Wade Phillips, who moved from coaching the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks last season to San Antonio in 2024.

The Brahmas are coming off an 18-9 victory over Birmingham – the Stallions’ first loss of the season.

“It’s a huge challenge for our offense, especially when we see them hold one of the better offenses in the league to nine points,” Becht said. “But we did play them before. We do know this defense. We played well against them last year when they were Houston. We played well against them this year when they were just as good on defense. …

“We definitely know what we’re up against, for sure.”

After what he called a “collective letdown,” Becht is looking for a solid response from his team this week.

“I think if we have everybody just be consistent, we can win the championship,” Becht said. “We don’t need any great out-of-the-box, Superman performances. We just need more guys to be more consistent because we don’t have that Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tyreek Hill that can change the game. We got a collection of good players that if they just play to the standard that’s consistent, we’ll be hard to beat.”
