Free summer meals for Alabama kids: Where, when to find them

Free meals are available to children 18 years old and younger in many places in Alabama this summer through the federal Summer Food Service Program.

The map below shows where to find summer meals, with most sites starting serving meals next Monday, June 3, and each weekday, Monday through Friday. Families should call first to see if any child 18 and under can eat free or if meals are available only to students enrolled in summer schools or camps.

Some sites will be open for a couple of weeks while others will operate the entire month of June.

Some of the state’s largest sponsors, including Feeding the Gulf Coast, which sponsored 94 sites last year and Mobile County schools, which sponsored 71 sites, aren’t on the list just yet.

The Alabama State Department of Education hasn’t finished approving all of the applications it received, according to state education officials, so the current map only shows the 370 public and private school sites that have been approved.

Last year, nearly 1,000 locations served free meals. This map will be updated.

Alabama’s information hasn’t been posted on the USDA’s Summer Meal Site Finder yet, but the map will be updated every Friday through the summer, according to the website.

Families can text “FOOD” to 304-304 or call 1-866-348-6479 to find a site near you.
