Suspect charged in Montgomery shooting that left woman dead, another hurt

A suspect was captured Wednesday and charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with a Montgomery shooting last week that left one woman dead and another injured, police said.

Kelvin Surls, 42, of Montgomery, was identified as a suspect in the May 23 shooting of 23-year-old Montgomery resident Khiana Humphrey, said Montgomery police Maj. Saba Coleman.

Montgomery police SWAT and the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force captured Surls and took him to the Montgomery County jail without bond, said Coleman.

It was unclear where Surls was apprehended.

He was charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident in the 600 block of Iris Lane.

Humphrey was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.
