Actress who portrayed Gomer Pyle’s girlfriend, ‘General Hospital’ alum dead at 88

Elizabeth MacRae, the actress who played Gomer Pyle’s girlfriend, has died. She was 88.

MacRae died Monday in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she was raised, her family announced.

The actress also played Festus Haggen’s girlfriend on television’s “Gunsmoke.”

MacRae showed up as Lou-Ann Poovie on 15 episodes of the CBS comedy “Gomer Pyle: USMC” during its final three seasons (1966-69). She also portrayed April Clomley, the girlfriend of deputy marshal Festus (Ken Curtis), on CBS’ “Gunsmoke” from 1962-64.

Over a career that spanned 25 years, MacRae was featured in “Route 66,” “Surfside 6,” “Rendezvous,” “The Fugitive,” “Gunsmoke, Bonanza,” I Dream of Jeannie” and “The Andy Griffith Show” among others.

MacRae also appeared “General Hospital,” where she played Meg Baldwin from August 1969 until 1973, when the character was killed off. She also appeared in other soaps, “Another World,” “Days of Our Lives,” “Guiding Light” and “Search for Tomorrow.”
