Former Alabama prep star getting $72.5 million contract extension
Houston Texans wide receiver Nico Collins’ breakout season in 2023 has been followed by a contract extension in 2024.
The former Clay-Chalkville High School standout and the NFL team have agreed on a three-year, $72.5 million contract extension that includes $52 million in guaranteed money, NFL Network and ESPN reported on Tuesday.
Collins had 80 receptions for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 regular-season games in 2023 after catching 70 passes for 927 yards and three touchdowns in 24 games in his first two seasons. Collins also had 11 receptions for 164 yards and one touchdown in two playoff games last season.
The contract extension will prevent Collins from becoming an unrestricted free agent after the 2024 season. Collins signed a four-year, $4.872 million contract with the Texans after being chosen in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
To get Collins with the 89th overall selection, Houston traded the 109th and 158th picks in the 2021 draft plus a fourth-round choice in the 2022 draft to the Carolina Panthers.

Collins earned Michigan’s Offensive Player of the Year Award for the 2019 season, but when the Big Ten decided to cancel its 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic, Collins moved on to preparing for his next step in football. After Collins selected an agent and set up his training for the pros, the Big Ten reversed course and decided to stage a season, although Michigan played only six games in 2020.
Collins got back on the football field in Mobile in January 2021 at the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Collins earned Alabama Sports Writers Association first-team All-State recognition as a senior in 2016 after receiving second-team selections in 2014 and 2015 at Clay-Chalkville.
In 2014, Clay-Chalkville swept through 15 games without a loss, scored at least 35 points in every contest, rocketed to 85 points in its playoff opener against Scottsboro and capped the season with a 36-31 victory over Saraland in the AHSAA’s Class 6A championship game.
The next season, the Cougars raced through 14 games by scoring at least 38 points in all of them until Spanish Fort defeated Clay-Chalkville 31-28 in the Class 6A title contest.
In Collins’ final two seasons with the Cougars, he caught 103 passes for 1,968 yards and 25 touchdowns.
