MaxPreps softball national top 25: Orange Beach ranked No. 1, Hewitt-Trussville No. 9

The latest MaxPreps national top 25 softball rankings feature two state teams, including Orange Beach at No. 1.

The Makos (46-1) recently won the Class 4A state championship, its fourth straight title, and moved to the top spot after being ranked No. 4 last week.

Orange Beach won its final 11 games, including beating Curry 10-2 in the first round of AHSAA state championship play then downing Cherokee County 7-6, Houston Academy 6-3 and won the title by beating Brooks 2-1 in the championship.

Hewitt-Trussville (37-6) is at No. 9 this week after being ranked No. 13 the previous week. The Huskies also won their final 11 games on the way to capturing their second straight Class 7A title, beating Dothan 14-0, Thompson 4-2, Hoover 5-4 and Daphne 1-0 in nine innings in the championship tournament.

Hewitt-Trussville has won four championships in the past six seasons.

Hewitt-Trussville’s Sara Phillips was named MaxPreps state Player of the Year, edging out Orange Beach’s KG Favors.

Phillips was 16-2 this season, striking out 175 in 98 2/3 innings and allowing 15 earned runs for a 1.35 ERA with a 0.83 WHIP. A Mississippi State signee, Phillips struck out 50 in 32 postseason innings with just one earned run.

She pitched a nine-inning, four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts in beating Daphne in the state championship game.
