$5M FEMA grant will help Foley build a hurricane safe room

With the help of a federal grant, Foley is in the beginning stages of constructing a safe room downtown that’s estimated to cost over $5.5 million.

A “safe room” is a facility specifically designed to meet Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) criteria and “provide near-absolute protection in extreme wind events, including tornadoes and hurricanes,” according to the agency’s website.
