Man found guilty of attempted murder of Mobile police officer

A man was convicted of the 2018 attempted murder of a Mobile police officer, prosecutors announced Tuesday night.

A Mobile County jury also found Dajoune Dubose guilty of first-degree theft for driving a stolen car used in the 2018 attempted slaying of Mobile Police Cpl. Ben Towarnyckyj, said Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood.

Dubose was driving a car reported stolen on Nov. 9, 2018 and reached under the seat for a gun when Towarnyckyj ordered him to step out of the vehicle.

Dubose then fired two shots at the corporal, striking Towarnyckyj once in the arm.

Dubose fled the scene but was apprehended on the night of Nov. 9.

“Dajoune Dubose was only thinking of himself on Nov. 9, 2018, and his actions proved to be intentional,” Blackwood said following the jury’s verdict.

“Cpl. Towarnyckyj is lucky to be alive and we are grateful he was able to testify today and receive the justice he deserved.”

Dubose’s sentencing was scheduled for June 26.
