Think Netflix is expensive? These people pay $4,000 a month to watch movies at home

If you’re griping because your monthly subscription fees to various streaming services seem to keep going up, consider this: There’s a movie subscription service provided by movie studios to the rich and famous that allows them to watch movies at home the same day they’re released into theaters.

The Bel Air Circuit, now known as Bel Air Cinema, was launched decades ago by Hollywood studio heads, including Louis B. Mayer and Daryl Zanuck, to allow them and other to view new releases in the comfort of their own homes.

Over the years, however, the service grew to include Hollywood A-listers and others who could afford the price tag — rumored to be as much as $100,000 to join and $4,000 per month.

Among those known to subscribe to the service are Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino, Sharon Stone, Lionel Richie, Barry Manilow and Ben Affleck, among others.

According to the Bel Air Cinema website, members are film “enthusiasts,” but for security reasons or discretion are unable or unwilling to see movies in a public theatre.

“They are sued to timing events to suit their schedule and have the means and desire to screen the latest content straight from the day of release,” the website reads. “We deliver this in a format drawn right from the director’s master file.”

Subscribers are required to have a dedicated internet connection, and a connection of 100 Mbps is recommended, but the Bel Air Cinema system can operate as low as 25 Mbps. Customers control the system via an iPad.

Bel Air says it delivers movies straight from the studios to private residences in Digital Cinema Packages, which is the “same as used throughout the film industry for Worldwide Premiers.”

The equipment Bel Air provides is, of course, state-of-the-art. It’s DCI-grade, meaning it is approved by Digital Cinema Initiative, a consortium of the major movie studios which establish common systems for digital cinema.
