South Alabama basketball adds Faulkner guard transfer

South Alabama on Sunday picked up a basketball transfer portal commitment from former Faulkner University guard Jayden Cooper, a source confirmed to AL.com.

The 6-foot-2 Cooper averaged 21.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game as a true freshman in 2023-24 for the Eagles, an NAIA program in Montgomery. The Pike Road High School graduate was the Southern States Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-conference pick this past season, and has three years of eligibility remaining.

Cooper is the Jaguars’ fourth portal commitment of the spring 2024 cycle, joining guards Barry Dunning of UAB and Dylan Fasoyiro of Division II Daemen (N.Y.) University and guard/forward Randy Brady (Chattanooga). South Alabama is expected to add up to three more transfers before summer semester classes begin on May 29.

South Alabama went 16-16 in 2023-24, its sixth season under coach Richie Riley.
