South Alabama baseball falls 7-4 to Louisiana-Monroe

There was no comeback for South Alabama baseball on Saturday; a disastrous fourth inning made sure of that.

The Jaguars allowed six runs in the inning — including a three-run triple on a misplayed ball in the outfield — on the way to a 7-4 loss to Louisiana-Monroe at Stanky Field. South Alabama — which rallied for a 6-2 win on Friday night — falls to 28-22 overall, 12-14 in the Sun Belt Conference, with the series finale set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

South Alabama took a 2-0 lead on Micah Morgan’s 2-run single in the bottom of the first, but things fell apart for the Jaguars in the aforementioned top of the fourth. ULM sent 10 men to the plate, six of them scoring, the last three thanks to some shabby South Alabama defense.

Michelle Artzberger tied the game with a 2-run homer to dead center, then the next two hitters got on via a single and a walk. That marked the end of the day for South Alabama starter Leif Moore, who allowed just a single in the first three innings, but failed to record an out in the fourth.

Tyler Smith got the next two men out, then ULM took the lead on Jake Haggard’s RBI groundout. Hasani Johnson singled and Jason Zmejkoski walked to load the bases, then 9-hole hitter Carson Jones lifted a fly ball into deep right-center.

South Alabama right fielder Ethan Melton appeared to be tracking the ball, but there was some sort of miscommunication between Melton and center fielder Will Turner. Turner ended up diving for the ball, but could not come up with it, and all three runners scored on Jones’ triple to make it 6-2.

The Warhawks added a run on Easton Whitfield’s RBI single in the sixth to go up by five. The Jaguars got two in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Lucas Ismaili and JG Bell to make it 7-4, but got no closer.

ULM starter Joey Cirelli (1-3) was charged with four runs on six hits in five-plus innings, with Parker Seay and Aiden Haynes shutting out the Jaguars the rest of the way. Seay allowed just two hits and two walks in three innings, while Haynes worked around a pair of ninth-inning walks to pick up his first save of the season.

Moore (2-4) took the loss for South Alabama, allowing four runs in three-plus innings. Smith gave up three runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings before Danny Diaz closed out the game with 3 1/3 scoreless.

South Alabama finished with eight hits, but all were singles. The Jaguars left seven runners on base in the final four innings, and the bottom four hitters in the order combined to go 1-for-14 with a single and two walks.
