Class 4A Girls: Weekley powers Westminster Christian by St. Michael for 2nd title

Westminster Christian’s AnnaLi Weekley scored the go-ahead goal and added another to hammer the final nail as the top-ranked Wildcats earned a 3-1 victory over No. 2 St. Michael in Friday’s Class 4A title match at Huntsville’s John Hunt Park.

“This is incredible and this team has been incredible,” Weekley said. “We always find a way to work for each other. Last year was great and it showed our hard work, but this year it really showed our character. I’m really proud of that.”

Westminster Christian (18-2-1) has won two straight championships after defeating St. Michael in back-to-back title matches.

“They’re amazing, man,” Westminster Christian coach Hunter Chapman said. “Everybody sees the great soccer players they are but they’re phenomenal girls. Phenomenal people raised by great parents. I’m honored and blessed by the Lord to have this opportunity. Our identity is not in this game, win or lose or how good or how bad they play, they have a much bigger purpose and are more than soccer players.”

The Cardinals went up 1-0 in the first minute of action, Maddie Key scoring on a solo goal, but only threatened twice more on shots on goal.

Westminster Christian eighth-grader Annie Collier knotted the score at 1-all on an assist from Clara Norris not four minutes later.

Weekley scored the go-ahead goal in the 31st minute and provided breathing room with her second goal midway through the second half.

“Coach always tells me to stay wide and get them on the outside,” she said. “Their coach kind of caught on and they started pushing me to the left. So I just took it, got inside and saw the opening on the goalie’s right side and shot it through her.”

Piper Blazier had 2 saves for the Wildcats and Weekley was named MVP after scoring 5 total goals in the semifinals and title match.

“She’s our program’s all-time leading goal scorer and that means a lot for sure, helping win games and championships,” Chapman said. “But what people don’t see is the type of leader she is and how she treats others. That’s what I’m most proud of. We’re definitely going to miss her and all the seniors.”
