The Thunder finished the regular season as the best team in the Western Conference, and they are currently 5-0 during the 2024 NBA playoffs. After sweeping the New Orleans Pelicans, the Thunder defeated the Mavericks 117-95 in their series opener on Tuesday. In their blowout victory, the Thunder had five players score at least 11 points. Their scorers were led by star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished the night with 29 points.
Gilgeous-Alexander has been his team’s offensive leader all season, but he has received a lot of help from a couple of his teammates. Forward Jalen Williams is averaging more than 20 points per game this postseason and scored 18 points in the series opener against the Mavericks. Rookie forward Chet Holmgren finished game 1 with 19 points and three blocks, as he is a defensive leader for the Thunder. These three have played well together and have made the Thunder look unstoppable in the postseason thus far.
The Mavericks do not have as much help across their roster, as they mostly rely on their star players Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. In game 1, the Mavericks scored only 95 points, which is the fewest points they have scored during this postseason. Dončić only scored 19 points and shot 6-19 from the field, which is his worst postseason performance this season. Conversely, Irving shot 50% from the field and scored 20 points, but his great performance was not enough to keep the Mavericks in the game.
Mavericks center Daniel Gafford finished game 1 with 16 points, which is much better than his postseason average of 7.6 points per game. Even with this overperformance, Dončić’s struggles were too much for the team to overcome. In order to be competitive in this series, the Mavericks need both of their stars to play at a high level every game. So, fans can expect Dončić to bounce back from his poor performance and play well tonight in Oklahoma City.
