Brandon Miller gets new coach for his second NBA season
Former Alabama All-American Brandon Miller will have a new head coach in his second NBA season with the Charlotte Hornets.
On Thursday, the Hornets announced Boston Celtics assistant coach Charles Lee had been selected to succeed Steve Clifford.
Clifford stepped down at the end of the season – his 10th as an NBA head coach.
The Hornets posted a 21-61 record in the 2023-24 NBA season, but Clifford’s 244 victories are the most for a Charlotte coach.
Lee has been an NBA assistant coach for the past 10 seasons – four with the Atlanta Hawks and five with the Milwaukee Bucks before this season with Boston. Only one of those teams had a losing season, and the Celtics posted the best record in the NBA for the 2023-24 campaign. Milwaukee won the 2021 NBA championship with Lee on its coaching staff.
At 39, Lee is 23 years younger than Clifford.
“The opportunity to be the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets is a dream come true,” Lee said in a release from the team. “… The Hornets have a talented young core of players, and I’m excited about our future and what we can build here. There are few places as passionate about basketball as the Carolinas, and I look forward to coming to Charlotte and getting to work.”

Miller joined Charlotte from the Crimson Tide as the second selection in the 2023 NBA Draft. He finished third in the balloting for the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy, which is presented to the NBA’s Rookie of the Year.
Miller averaged 17.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his first NBA season, and his 184 3-point baskets rank as the fourth-most by a rookie in league history.
