152 layoffs planned as north Alabama manufacturing plant closes

More than 150 workers could will be laid off as a manufacturing facility in north Alabama closes.

Linamar Structures USA is closing its factory in Hartselle, according to a notice the company filed with the Alabama Department of Commerce this week. The layoff will affect 152 people as the factory’s closure begins on Aug. 15.

The plant produces parts for various vehicle manufacturers, including Honda, BMW, John Deere, and General Motors.

Roxanne Rose, Linamar’s vice president of Global Human Resources, said the Hartselle plant will close in early 2025 as the company streamlines operations. She said that the employees in Hartselle have been offered jobs at a location about 50 miles northwest in Muscle Shoals.

“Linamar recently acquired 3 new businesses which included 2 facilities located quite closely together in Alabama,” Linamar said in a statement to AL.com. “Rather than operate 2 separate facilities it made more sense to consolidate the business into one larger facility.”

“We look forward to bringing our teams together and continuing to employ the solid team we have at Hartselle,” the statement adds.

Federal law requires major employers to give notice of layoffs or closures.
