14-year-old Decatur shooting suspect’s charges upgraded after victim dies

A 14-year-old boy suspected of shooting another teen in Decatur is now facing manslaughter charges after the victim died of his injuries Sunday, police said Wednesday.

The suspected gunman, whose name was not released because he is a minor, was among four arrested in connection with the Friday shooting in the 1100 block of 7th Ave. SE, police said.

The 17-year-old victim was taken in a private vehicle to Huntsville Hospital, where he died of his injuries Sunday.

The 14-year-old boy was initially charged with assault.

The charge was upgraded to manslaughter on Monday.

Further investigation revealed that the car that transported the victim to the hospital had been reported stolen in February. Officers executing a search warrant at a residence in southwest Decatur also found several stolen guns from a burglary at Bama Pawn on April 30.

Police charged 18-year-old Kaleb Kirk with receiving stolen property and held him at the Morgan County Jail on $7,500 bond.

Two 17-year-old suspects also were charged with receiving stolen property and transported to the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Facility in Tuscumbia.
