Jalen Hurts: ‘I got a bounty on me every week’

The Philadelphia Eagles’ injury report for Tuesday did not include the name of quarterback Jalen Hurts, which indicates the former Alabama standout participated fully in practice for the first time since he suffered a sprained throwing shoulder in a 25-20 victory over the Chicago Bears on Dec. 18.

Feeling good” was Hurts’ summation of his status on Tuesday as the Eagles prepare for their postseason opener.

After getting hurt, Hurts missed two games – both lost by Philadelphia. He returned to the field for the regular-season finale as the Eagles defeated the New York Giants 22-16 on Jan. 8 to secure the No. 1 seed for the NFC playoffs.

As the top seed, Philadelphia received a bye in the first round of the playoffs, giving Hurts an extra week to heal before the Eagles play the Giants again on Saturday night.

Hurts said he didn’t anticipate his shoulder affecting his play nor was he concerned about opposing defenders targeting the injury.

“It’s football,” Hurts said. “I got a bounty on me every week I go out there on the field, so I’m going to go out there and play my game, and whatever happens happens. …

“Obviously, the quarterback gets a lot of attention, and I think every quarterback in the league has a bounty on him, in a sense, to stop him.”

Philadelphia is preparing to play the Giants for the third time in six weeks. The Eagles defeated New York 48-22 on Dec. 11 to improve to 12-1 as Hurts threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 77 yards and one touchdown.

New York qualified for the postseason as the NFC’s second wild-card qualifier. As the No. 6 seed, the Giants upended the No. 3 Minnesota Vikings 31-24 on Sunday in a Super Wild-Card Weekend game to advance.

“We know we’re playing a really good team, they have a really good defense and they do a lot of really good things,” Hurts said. “That’s on both sides of the ball, so we have to come prepared, put in a great week of preparation to go out there and play well on Saturday.”

For Philadelphia’s third meeting with the Giants this season, the Eagles need to stick with what earned the No. 1 seed, Hurts said.

“I think it’s simple: It’s just going out there and doing what you’ve been doing all year,” Hurts said. “Having the same approach. We’ve always had a focused approach, a laser-focused approach, a process-oriented approach, a diligent approach to what we’re doing, so nothing changes.”

Last year, Philadelphia was in New York’s playoff cleats – a wild-card qualifier playing on the road. Tampa Bay ended the Eagles’ season by beating Philadelphia 31-15.

“Immediately after last year’s playoff wild-card game, there was a ton that I learned from and took away from that going into the offseason,” Hurts said, “so I think it’s helpful for us to have all experienced that together as a team and to have a lot of guys back, to have a lot of guys like a Jason Kelce decides to stay because he sees something in what he’s played with and the potential of what that could be, so we have everything in front of us.

“We’re just taking it day-by-day, like I said, but there’s a ton that we’ve endured and experienced and gone through to be here and have this opportunity we have now, so we’re going to go out there and try to do what we’ve been doing, try to stay true to ourselves, stay true to our process, the grind, the hustle that we put in day in and day out and go leave it all out there on the field and see what result comes.”

The Giants and Eagles will square off at 7:15 p.m. CST Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. FOX will televise the game.
