52-year-old man found dead after fire at Ensley home

A Birmingham man was found dead after a fire inside his Ensley home.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Antonio Maurice Sistrunk. He was 52.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the home Saturday morning. Sistrunk was pronounced dead on the scene at 10:09 a.m.

Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said the fire happened in the overnight hours and went unnoticed because there was no visible fire on the outside of the home.

The fire itself was not called into 911. Firefighters were dispatched to the home on a medical call when a neighbor discovered the incident, Hendon said.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said an autopsy performed Sunday showed no evidence of foul play.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation by BFRS.
