Ex-South Alabama basketball guard headed to AAC school
Former South Alabama basketball player Marcus “Smurf” Millender is headed to UT-San Antonio, he announced on Sunday.
The 5-foot-11 Millender averaged 9.7 points, 3.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 32 games for the Jaguars in 2023-24. He entered the NCAA transfer portal on April 26 and announced in a post on his Instagram account he is transferring to UTSA.
A Houston native, Millender returns to his home state with the Roadrunners. A member of the American Athletic Conference, UTSA went just 11-21 in 2023-24 and has not made the NCAA tournament since 2011.
UTSA recently hired former Alabama assistant Austin Claunch as head coach. Claunch is also a former head coach at Nicholls, where he succeeded current South Alabama coach Richie Riley.
South Alabama went 16-16 in 2023-24. The Jaguars last week added a pair of transfer wing players, Dylan Fasoyiro (Daemen University) and Mobile native and former Mr. Basketball Barry Dunning (UAB).
