Troy lineman goes from tryout player to Seahawks’ roster
Thirty-one unsigned rookies participated in the Seattle Seahawks’ rookie minicamp this weekend. One will be staying in the Pacific Northwest as a member of the Seattle roster.
The Seahawks have signed Troy nose tackle Buddha Jones after he participated in the rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, the NFL team announced on Sunday.
The participants at the minicamp included Seattle’s eight draft picks, 16 rookies who were not drafted but were signed by the Seahawks in the past week and the 31 players invited to try out.
The tryout players included five others from Alabama high schools and colleges, including two of Jones’ teammates:
· Troy safety Irshaad Davis (Alabama State)
· Troy linebacker Richard Jibunor
· Alabama linebacker Trezmen Marshall
· South Alabama linebacker Jamie Sheriff
· Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa (Thompson, Alabama)
The draft picks included Auburn cornerbacks D.J. James (Spanish Fort) and Nehemiah Pritchett (Jackson). The undrafted rookies signed before minicamp as free agents included cornerback Ro Torrence (Bessemer City, Auburn).
The Seahawks signed Jones even though they used the 16th selection in the NFL Draft on April 25 on Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy II.
Jones played three seasons at Troy after two seasons at Kent State. As the Trojans’ starting nose tackle the past two seasons, Jones recorded 57 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and one forced fumble.
Jones’ signing filled the last open spot on Seattle’s 90-player offseason roster.
