AHSAA track: Hoover sweeps boys’, girls’ state titles
Thompson High School senior Bradley Franklin and St. Paul’s Janie Ford each established new records as the 100th AHSAA State Track and Field Championships concluded on Saturday at the Gulf Shores Sports Complex.
Franklin set the Class 7A and overall 110-meter hurdles state meet record in the finals Saturday clocking 13.37 seconds – which was also his personal best. His previous best was 13.57 seconds. The previous record of 13.53 was run by Hoover’s Marlon Humphrey in the 2013 prelims. Former Thompson hurdler Emmanuel Tait set the previous 7A hurdles record with a 13.50 time in the 2016 finals.
Ford, who won the AHSAA Heptathlon in 2023, set a new state record in Class 6A in the 300-meter hurdles with a 42.32 time in the finals. She swept the hurdles events in her class with a 13.97 time to win the 6A 100-meter hurdles as well. Breelyn Jones of Saraland was second in the 300 hurdles, clocking 44.86 seconds. Ford also won the Class 6A long jump and triple jump at the 2024 championships.
Coach Chris Schmidt’s Hoover teams won both the Class 7A boys’ and girls’ state titles with 156.5 and 90.5 points, respectively. Vestavia Hills was runner-up with 73 points and James Clemens had 71 in the 7A boys’ competition. Hewitt-Trussville was second with 71 points in the 7A girls’ points race.
Mountain Brook won the Class 6A state girls’ title for the third year in as row with 114 points. The Spartans have won 13 state titles overall. Fort Payne was the runner-up with 63.5 points. Scottsboro took its first state girls’ championship since 2013 by posting 106 points in Class 5A. Runner-up Arab had 75.5 points. In Class 4A, Bayside Academy had 108 points to capture the girls’ 4A state title for the first time. Cherokee County was runner-up with 66 points.
Northridge out-pointed UMS-Wright 62.5 to 47.25 to win the 6A boys’ state crown for the first time in school history. Scottsboro won its third state championship in a row in Class 5A boys’ competition by posting 141 points with Birmingham’s John Carroll taking second with 71. Hamilton scored 94 points to earn the 4A crown with defending state champ Brooks finishing second with 56 points.
In the Class 7A girls’ 4×100-meter relay finals, Auburn, Enterprise and Foley turned in the three best times of the year. The Lady Tigers emerged with a 47.40 time – best of the season. Enterprise was second clocking 47.56 and Foley was third at 47.61. Only 21/100ths of a second separated all three teams.

BOYS
JOHN SHOEMAKER OAK MOUNTAIN: Set a new record in the Class 7A 3,200-meer run with a winning time of 9:09.68. Runner-up Luke Alverson of James Clemens ran a 9:10.21 and also broke the previous record (9:11.55) set by Maxwell Hardin of Auburn in 2023.
JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL 4×100 RELAY: The Aggies won in the finals with a winning time of 42.08 seconds.
HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL 4X100-RELAY: As expected, the Bucs had the best 4×100-relay time of the state meet, winning the Class 7A title with a 41.58 finish in the finals.
JAYSHON RIGLE, ATHENS: The senior had his personal best time in the finals as he raced to first place in the Class 6A 110-meter hurdles clocking 13.85 seconds.
T.J. AUTREY, AUBURN: Cleared 6 feet, 10¼ inches in the high jump to set the 7A record in that event – being the old record by a quarter of an inch.
JAKE WEBB, HAMILTON: The sophomore cleared 15 feet, 6 inches to win the Class 4A pole vault for the Aggies.
ISAIAH RIGGINS, CARROLL: Won the 5A long jump (22-07.75) and the triple jump (47-08.25) for the Eagles from Ozark.
CHARLES PERRY, UMS-WRIGHT: Won three events in 6A competition sweeping the 800 meters (1:53.02), the 1,600 meters (9:25.04) and the 3,200 meters (4:14.49).
NEMO ASKEW, HANDLEY: Won the Class 4A 110-meter hurdles at a personal best 14.6 seconds.
TRE PETERSON, PELL CITY: Had the state’s fourth-best time of the season with a 10.59 finish to win the Class 5A 100-meter dash title.
JORDAN URRUTIA, BOB JONES: Edged Fairhope’s Ty Watkins at the finish line to capture the Class 7A 100-meter dash championship. He clocked 10.62 with Watkins at 10.63. He also was the only runner to go under 21 seconds in the 200-meter dash – winning the 7A finals at 24.85.
ALEX JOHNSON, CHEROKEE COUNTY: Ran the Class 4A 100-meter dash finals in 10.73 seconds, a personal record, to win the event for the Warriors. He followed with a winning 21.68 time in the 200-meter dash to win that event as well.
QUINDAVIOUS SWAIN, SYLACAUGA: Won the 100- and 200-meter dashes Saturday with winning times of 10.76 and 21.47 seconds, respectively, in the finals.
GIRLS
CAROLINE SANDERS, ARAB: Set a new Class 5A state record in the long jump with a winning leap of 20 feet, 1 inch. She also won the Class 5A 200-meter dash in 24.79 seconds, the triple jump with a leap of 38-06.50 and the high jump at 5-4.
ELLIE PARTRICK, BROOKS: Won the Class 4A javelin event with a toss of 152 feet, 4 inches to set a new class state record.
KATIE WILKERSON BEAUREGARD: Heaved the discus 145 feet, 11½ inches to establish a new 5A girls’ state record – breaking the old mark by almost 18 feet.
HAYLEI MASON, MONTGOMERY CATHOLIC: Won the Class 4A 100-meter hurdles finals with a 15.07-second time.
ANNIE KERR, MOUNTAIN BROOK: Cleared 13 feet, 4 inches to set a new record in the Class 6A pole vault.
MYLA REED, BAKER: Won the Class 7A 100-meter dash finals with a time of 11.69 seconds. Denise Roper of Foley was second at 11.89 and Zaria Parker of James Clemens was third at 11.94. All three ran their personal best times of the season.
SOMER RONE, PARK CROSSING: Swept the Class 6A 100- and 200-meter dash races with winning times of 12.01 and 24.62 seconds, respectively.
MARY HAYES JOHNSON, CHEROKEE COUNTY: Clocked 24.86 seconds to win the 200-meter dash title in Class 4A.
