Adrian Martinez passes Stallions into playoffs
Birmingham Stallions quarterback Adrian Martinez entered Saturday’s game against the Memphis Showboats as the leading rusher in the United Football League this season.
As far as the Showboats are concerned, he might as well be the league’s leading passer, too.
When Birmingham beat Memphis 33-14 on April 13, Martinez threw for 334 yards and two touchdowns. In the Stallions’ 39-21 victory over the Showboats in Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday, he surpassed those numbers. Martinez completed 23-of-36 passes for 368 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Martinez posted the most passing yards in a game in the league this season and became the first UFL player with four touchdown passes in a contest in 2024.
In improving to 6-0, the Stallions posted their 13th consecutive victory. With four games remaining in the regular season, Birmingham already has secured its spot as one of the two USFL Conference teams in the UFL playoffs.
Martinez threw touchdown passes of 4 yards to running back C.J. Marable with 3:58 left in the first half, 80 yards to wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. with 2:45 left in the third quarter and 12 yards to wide receiver Marlon Williams with 5:21 remaining in the game.
But the biggest difference-maker among Martinez’s TD throws on Saturday might have been the one with 23 seconds left in the first half.
Trailing 16-9, Memphis stopped the Stallions’ punt fake on a fourth-and-3 at the Showboats 41-yard line with 48 seconds left in the first half. But on the next snap, Birmingham defensive end Taco Charlton’s pass rush caused Memphis quarterback Case Cookus to fumble, and defensive end Jordan Thompson recovered for the Stallions at the Showboats 38.
Martinez cashed in by connecting with Williams on a 28-yard touchdown pass to give Birmingham a 22-9 halftime lead.
In addition to Thompson’s fumble recovery, nose tackle Carlos Davis recovered a fumble and safety Kenny Robinson Jr. intercepted a pass for Birmingham.
Running back Ricky Person Jr. scored the Stallions’ first touchdown with 11:55 left in the first half, and the first of Martinez’s three 2-point passes to tight end Jordan Thomas gave Birmingham an 8-6 lead.
Memphis slipped to 1-5 with its fifth straight loss.
Birmingham’s victory was marred by an injury to defensive back Lorenzo Burns, who got hurt on kickoff coverage with 6:08 left in the third quarter. Burns was loaded into an ambulance on the field while strapped to a backboard with his head immobilized. But Burns did gesture encouragingly to teammates and fans from that position.
In Week 7, the Stallions play the St. Louis Battlehawks at 3 p.m. CDT Saturday at Protective Stadium in Birmingham. FOX will televise the game.
