29-year-old inmate found dead in cell at William Donaldson Correctional Facility
A 29-year-old inmate at William Donaldson Correctional Facility died Thursday at the western Jefferson County prison.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Demetrise Rashaun Maye.
Maye was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction in the 2016 slaying of 23-year-old Tractviner Howell in Sumter County.
Coroner’s officials said Maye was found unresponsive in his single cell at 1:28 a.m. Thursday. He was pronounced dead at 2:26 a.m.
An autopsy performed later Thursday showed no sign of trauma or foul play. The cause of death is pending additional lab studies.
The Alabama Department of Corrections – Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
