Dale Strong picked for another congressional committee he sought

Congressman Dale Strong has again landed a spot on a committee in which he wanted to be appointed.

Strong, representing the Huntsville area and north Alabama, has been nominated to the Committee on Homeland Security by the Republican Steering Committee, his office announced Tuesday afternoon.

On Monday, Strong announced his nomination to the Armed Services Committee. The two assignments were top committee priorities for Strong in his first term.

The House Republican Conference is expected to formally approve the nominations next week in finalizing the appointment process.

The Homeland Security committee, established in 2005 following the terrorist attacks in 2001, “focuses on legislation and oversight related to the security of the United States,” according to its website.

“I am honored to be nominated to serve on the Committee on Homeland Security, where one of my top priorities is to immediately secure our border and ensure that the border patrol has the resources it needs to start enforcing our immigration laws,” Strong said in the announcement.

Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, has offices in Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile and Strong’s district of Huntsville.

In the announcement, Strong said he envisioned the Homeland Security committee playing a key role in protecting the U.S. border with Mexico.

“It is time to secure our borders and ensure Customs and Border Protection agents are equipped with the tools and resources needed to keep illegal immigrants and drug traffickers from invading our country,” Strong said in the announcement. “North Alabama is proud to play a role in protecting Americans against threats to the homeland. Intelligence, cyber security and other crucial operations bring thousands of highly trained professionals to the 5th Congressional District, and I am proud to be their representative in Washington, D.C.”

In a December 2022 interview with AL.com, Strong spoke of his desire to sit on the Armed Services and Homeland Security committees.

“I want to be on committees that that we can make a difference here not only for America but for Alabama,” Strong said. “You’re generally going to get hopefully one good committee and then some others. But I promise you, I’m pushing for a couple. House Armed Services is my first push. Number two is Homeland Security.”
