Deadline passes with no action on Mac Jones’ contract

The Jacksonville Jaguars have picked up their options for a fifth season on the rookie contracts of quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne Jr., the NFL team announced on Saturday.

The action ties the players to Jacksonville through the 2025 season and guarantees $26.644 million for Lawrence and $6.143 million for Etienne in the 2025 campaign.

But the Jaguars had another player whose contract carried a team option for the 2025 season, and Jacksonville made no move to use it as the deadline to do so passed on Thursday.

Quarterback Mac Jones joined the Jaguars in a trade with the New England Patriots in March. Like Lawrence and Etienne, the former Alabama All-American was a first-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Each first-round draft pick signs a four-year contract that carries a team option for a fifth season. But that option must be exercised before the player’s fourth season. For the 2021 first-rounders, the deadline to do that arrived at 3 p.m. CDT Thursday.

Jones’ fifth-year option value was the same as Lawrence’s — $25.644 million, or the average of the third- through 20th-highest salaries for quarterbacks over the past five seasons.

That’s more than the value of Jones’ four-year rookie contract signed in 2021, which totals $15.586 million.

Fifth-year options come in four designations:

· Players who have been selected for at least two Pro Bowls on the original ballot for the all-star event in their first three seasons

· Player who have been selected for one Pro Bowl on the original ballot

· Players who have not been Pro Bowlers but have played at least 75 percent of the offensive or defensive snaps in two seasons or 50 percent of the overall snaps across three seasons

· Players who have not reached the Pro Bowl or the playing-time standards

Jones went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2021, but he was a replacement player, not an original selection, so his option salary comes from the playing-time tier.

Jones started all 42 games that he played for New England after joining the Patriots from Alabama as the 15th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. But with New England sliding to a 4-13 record in 2023, Jones spent the final six games on the bench, and the Patriots traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a draft pick this offseason.

In his first NFL season, Jones completed 352-of-521 passes for 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The Patriots posted a 10-7 record and went to the playoffs. Jones finished second in the voting for the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

In his second season, Jones completed 288-of-442 passes for 2,997 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. New England finished out of the playoffs at 8-9, and Jones missed three games because of an ankle injury.

In his third season, Jones completed 224-of-345 passes for 2,120 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Josh McDaniels served as New England’s offensive coordinator in Jones’ rookie season. When McDaniels left to become the Las Vegas Raiders’ coach, Jones worked with former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as his playcaller in his second season as the Patriots played without a named offensive coordinator. In 2023, New England brought in Alabama offensive coordinator and former Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien to run its offense.
