Former Alabama prep star gets a hit in first MLB at-bat
Jordan Beck took a swing at the second pitch that he saw in the Major Leagues on Tuesday night and slapped the slider into center field for a single.
The Colorado Rockies called up the former Hazel Green High School standout for his big-league debut after he hit .307 with a .594 slugging percentage, 24 runs and 28 RBIs in 25 games with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes to open the 2024 season.
Beck started in left field in Colorado’s 7-6, 10-inning loss to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night at loanDepot Park.
“Just take the moment in, take a deep breath, look around and be where my feet are,” Beck said. “A lot of people say write it down, what it feels like, don’t forget it. There are a lot of things that you want to remember from this day and carry on into the future.”
Beck singled in the first inning off Miami starter Sixto Sanchez, flied out to open the fourth, singled up the middle in the sixth and struck out in the ninth.
“I just think right now that I let the team down,” Beck said. “I’ve got to finish off that ninth inning. I’ve never been in that position before, and now I’m hungry to get back there.”
The Rockies selected Beck from Tennessee with the 38th choice in the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
The Boston Red Sox had chosen Beck with the 437th choice of the 2019 draft as a first baseman, but he opted to play at Tennessee instead.
At Hazel Green, Beck won the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 6A Player of the Year and Class 6A Hitter of the Year awards for the 2019 season. A first-team All-State selection in 2017 and 2019 and a second-team choice in 2018, Beck helped the Trojans win the AHSAA Class 6A championship in 2018.
Beck was a third-team All-State pick in basketball for the 2017-18 season, when Hazel Green reached the semifinals of the AHSAA Class 6A tournament. Beck was a teammate of guard Kira Lewis Jr., who now plays for the NBA’s Utah Jazz.
