An investigation is underway after a shooting in Bessemer sent one man to the hospital.

Witnesses report the incident was a shooting that involved law enforcement, but police have not confirmed that report.

Bessemer police Det. Justin Burmeister said only that the State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the probe.

Burmeister said the shooting took place about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of Fourth Avenue North.

He said it happened while officers were responding to a call of a car break-in.

The injured man was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

No additional information is being released at this time.
